Final Fantasy VII Revelation Demo Recap at TGS2026

We Played Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Tokyo Game Show 2026!

We had the incredible opportunity to experience Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Tokyo Game Show 2026! Thanks to the team at Square Enix, we were invited as press to visit their booth, play the new demo, and record gameplay footage ahead of the game's release in April.

The Square Enix booth was decorated with a giant scale of the meteor and its imminent approach upon the Planet, along with a Sephiroth model as he prepares his devastating blow. You can pose just as Aerith did for the perfect photo opportunity...! There was also a Buster Sword photo op as well as a huge Diamond Weapon photo area where you can ride the Hardy Daytona while fighting Diamond Weapon!

The ~35-minute demo gave us a first look at the beginning of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, including new story developments, battles in the Northern Crater, and our first chance to play as Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind!

Warning: Minor spoilers from the TGS 2026 demo below!

The TGS demo begins with Cloud and the party exploring the Northern Crater while pursuing Sephiroth and the mysterious hooded figures. Throughout the demo, Cloud continues to experience visions of Sephiroth, who repeatedly questions him about his "number." Cloud believes he should have one because every SOLDIER does, but Cloud's memories surrounding his past aren't exactly reliable.

The Northern Crater portion eventually leads into a three-phase battle against a new form of Jenova called Jenova Deathmourner. Cloud, Tifa, and Barret suddenly find themselves in a warped version of Nibelheim, where Zack appears within the events they're witnessing. Cloud even identifies Zack to Barret as a SOLDIER friend who died five years ago.

There's clearly a lot happening with Cloud's memories, and the demo leaves far more questions than answers about what Sephiroth is planning.

Finally Getting to Play as Vincent and Cid

The gameplay for both Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind brings completely different game styles to the party.

Vincent was particularly satisfying to use and proved incredibly useful for staggering enemies. We activated his Gates of Hell Limit Break during the Jenova Deathmourner fight, which ended up taking out Jenova for us.

Cid has a surprising amount of aerial combat in his moveset, with both swift and smooth transitions between attacks.

We also had a chance to experiment with some of the new Synergy Abilities, including Cloud and Vincent as well as Cloud and Cid. The gameplay was a great way to get a feel for the variety of ways you can play through the playable roster.

Our TGS 2026 Impressions

The demo packed a surprising amount into such a short preview that leaves us wanting more!

The combat feels just as satisfying as ever; Vincent and Cid are fantastic additions to the playable party, and the story wastes absolutely no time introducing new mysteries surrounding Cloud, Sephiroth, Zack, and Nibelheim.

If this is only the beginning of the game, we're very curious to see just how wild things will get later on. We also were able to speak with Director Hamaguchi Naoki directly regarding some of the feedback we had from the demo. In particular, there is a lot of field information going on while you explore the terrain, which does take the player out of the game since sometimes it distracts from the character banter that is happening as you explore. Hamaguchi said they will definitely take that into consideration.

All in all, we can't wait to experience the full game when it releases on April 8, 2027!

A huge thank you once again to Square Enix for inviting us to experience Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Tokyo Game Show 2026! Pre-orders for the different editions of the Remake Series are all available in our store here!
