It is a common Japanese custom that during the New Year, stores all over the country sell their leftover products from the previous year at a discounted price! We call this “Fukubukuro.”
Fun fact, “Fukubukuro” stems from the word “fuku” (meaning, “luck”) and fukuro (meaning “bag”). But if you put those two together, you get “bukuro”! The idea comes from the superstition that to have a successful year, one must not carry leftovers.
